Weapons to Help you Fight the Battle of the Bulge!

Scale Do you battle trying to keep your weight at a healthy level? If the answer is YES you are not alone.

My efforts to stay healthy and fully alive is much like a battle. The battle is never over but the change in my life came when I decided to fight instead of surrender.

Here are some weapons that have helped me fight the battle of the bulge.

A plan of “action”

A plan of “action” is essential to progress in any endeavor. A plan of “action” differs from an ordinary plan in that it includes action that will be implemented immediately.  Your plan should include what you will do today. That’s why it’s called a plan of “action.”

The rest of the plan can be developed as you proceed but it critical to start moving today.  Any plan is worthless until you make the first move.  Remember, a  body in motion tends to stay in motion, a body at rest tends to rest in peace.

Strategic “technical” support

Do you wonder how to keep track of calories you eat, how to measure the calories you burn and how to see measurable progress?

Theres an app for that.  Actually there are hundreds of apps for that.  This is what I use.

“MyFitnessPal.com”  This app This app is free, easy to use and very accurate.   It keeps track of calories eaten and calories burned.  It allows you to set goals and then track your progress toward those goals.

My favorite feature is the ability to scan the bar code on any packaged food and get a readout of calories per serving which you can instantly record for the day.  You also can create your own recipes for meals you eat often.  Name the meal, enter the ingredients and from then on it’s one click to enter the whole meal.   Works great on iphone and ipad.

A combat squad

This is a supportive group that will watch your backside, literally!  They will hold you accountable to your goals and encourage you to continue toward victory.

My wife Diane has found Weight Watchers to be extremely helpful. Of all the weight loss programs I have tried, they are the most realistic and most supportive.  The only reason I don’t attend now is because my travel schedule makes it impossible.  These folks understand the difference between a lifestyle change and fad diets.

Diets don’t work!  Realistic lifestyle changes that can be maintained for a lifetime are the key to continued health.

My friends, are my inspiration. But I am still searching for a combat squad I can connect with on a regular basis. I am convinced that it was the lack of this kind of ground support that led to my slip over the holiday season.

I have listed some other helpful weapons below.  If you don’t like these weapons keep looking till you find help.  You can’t go into battle naked.  It’s just not right!

Fitday.com  If you are really into tracking all the details of nutrition this is an excellent program.
Livestrong.com  Find calories for about anything you eat at chain restaurant. Unless it’s cat food!

This program is expensive and takes some time to learn, but it will help you develop a very accurate assessment of your metabolism, how many calories you burn each day, and provide an easy- to-read record of your complete nutritional intake.  Telephone coaching is offered early in the program and is invaluable for learning how to use the system. It does require that you wear an armband daily. It does not track calories burned while biking, but this can be entered manually.

  1. I have been working out…. but the big problem was I was eating all the wrong things apparently, no progress was being made and it didn’t help that we eat out a lot. About a month ago I started on a nutritional supplement program and started following the menu plan for weight loss, now the weight is coming off and I haven’t changed my workouts, pretty much the same thing. In the past 5 weeks I have lost 14.5 lbs and so excited, I wanted to lose about 30-40 lbs and now it looks like a reality for me. info at gotenergydrink.com on the program I am using, I think I already told you recently through facebook or twitter that you inspired me to get started on this.

  2. My Fitness Pal changed my life! Love that you use it too. I lost 15 lbs. since January and love the interactive apps like pedometer pro that quick link to myfitnesspal so that my burned calories are entered in automatically! Even if I have a day where I don’t pay attention, I always know how to get back on track.

    For me the education was the key. So many times you have NO IDEA how many calories you are eating.

    Calorie is King as they say, but then again, so is Ken Davis!

  3. My husband lost 140 lbs in a year and a half using MyFitnessPal. He also had a few accountability partners that kept him on track. Accountability partners is a feature of MyFitness Pal that helps keep you honest. Lately it has been more maintenance mode but we are ramping up to be more careful in eating choices again.

  4. I have lost 38 lbs over the last year. My weapons were SparkPeople.com and Fitbit.com. I received the fitbit ultra from my hubby for Mother’s Day last year (I wanted one). It was amazing how much that little device taught me. I didn’t realize how sedentary I was, until it came into my life!! It’s an AMAZING device. I highly recommend it!

Yesterday I was convicted that my body is the temple of God…it is one way that God reflects Jesus and it is wrong for me to think that I can put unnecessary “additions” to His temple (a front porch and back deck don’t seem to be needed). I don’t know what plan I will use except now to seek to ask God to show me how to be obedient to Him and to quit being so carefree about how I maintain this physical representation as my means of reflecting Jesus.

    • I love it! I am so tired in the middle of the night it would certainly cut down on consumption. let’s see. Breakfast at 11:30 pm Lunch at 12:00 am Dinner at 12:30 am and a 1:00 am snack. I’m on it Saralee.

    • Stephen, The key is to not stop fighting. Eventually you will find a strategy that works and the tide of the battle will turn. Don’t give up.

  6. Ken, I whole heartedly agree with you about MyFitnessPal app. It is awesome. Karen and I are doing the First Place 4 Health program at our church. It too promotes a lifestyle change rather than just “diet.” Thanks for the websites info.

    I heard about your comedy through one of the late Adrian Roger’s sermons on laughter. He mentioned you and how you chose not to use crude humor in your comedy which is great for those of us who watch what we allow in our minds and spirit. This question is not about weight loss, although I am in the process of making a “lifestyle” change myself. My question is about finding a good app that will help remind me to laugh throughout my day. I love to laugh but sometimes I need a reminder-ha! I can easily get caught up in the daily grind and miss out on the joy and laughter God brings each day. I wondered if you had an app that you use on a daily basis?
    Also, I watched your youtube video at Liberty University on living life and it brought me to tears. Thank you for this reminder…I will never forget the story of the old man who was a stroke victim and gave you that good advice to live life! God bless you and your family. Thanks for setting a good example for the younger generation.
