Amazing Grace on the Black Keys!

Please watch this entire clip. If this doesn’t ring your bell, your clapper is broken.  It’s one of the most amazing performances I have had the privilege to witness.  When you hear Wintley tell the history of the song Amazing Grace you will never listen to it the same way again.

When an artist performs and lives with genuine integrity and heart, the power of the music is multiplied. When the origin of the music and lyrics comes from the same genuine heartfelt source, the power is multiplied again.

Wintley Phipps is a first class musician and human being. His smile is a testament to his faith. I once accidentally introduced him by saying, “Please welcome to the stage, Whitney Houston.”   He didn’t even flinch.

This is my gift to you today.  Let me know what you think.

  1. Ken there’s something incredible about the power of music – especially when it’s blessed with the truth of God’s word! Thanks for this!

  2. Wow. Just wow. I’m not speechless often but I am right now. My spirit connected with his right away. I was told by a piano player that I only sing in the black keys. I have never been so proud to have had that statement made about me.

  3. I love to find out how or why a song was written, especially one that I have heard over and over, because every time I hear it after that, it’s ‘new’, and means so much more.
One thing Mr. Phipps said in the beginning, was something I needed to hear – “If the mountain was smooth, you couldn’t climb it.”
    Thank you for sharing.

  4. Thanks for sharing this amazing story Ken!!! I will definitely hear Amazing Grace differently…

  5. Ken this is wonderful. I hope one day I could be in a meeting with this brother. What a blessing! Thanks for sharing this. Bud

  6. Well done! This was informational and enjoyable. As a singer myself, it’s a piece of history that I will hug to my heart and pull out and dust off every time I’m about to sing Amazing Grace in the future. Funnily enough, our praise team sang Amazing Grace (My Chains Are Gone) today.

  7. Thank you so much for the gift Ken, that was so wonderful to learn and hear.

  8. For several months before her death, my Grandmother didn’t know us. On our last visit to see her, a group of residents were in the sunroom listening to a gospel group sing. When she saw my Mom and I, she smiled and I know she knew who we were. When Amazing Grace was sung, she sat up straight and listened very closely. I told my Mom,let’s go, this is how I want to remember her. She passed away 2 days later. So when I have her on my mind, I watch this video. It is the most beautiful version I’ve ever heard.
