Count Your Blessings

shutterstock_302454722I woke up this morning thinking about what I would write for this Thanksgiving post.

As the cobwebs slowly cleared from my brain, a song from long ago began to echo in my heart.

Be sure to listen to The Irish Choir’s arrangement of the song at the end of this post.

The song is entitled “Count Your Blessings.” The refrain from the song goes like this:

Count your blessings name them one by one.
Count your blessings see what God has done.
Count your many blessings.
Name them one by one.
And it will surprise you what the Lord has done.

I started to list the blessings for which I am thankful…

  1. I woke up this morning
  2. My wife Diane
  3. My children
  4. My beautiful grandchildren
  5. My health
  6. My mental health – Some of you may question this!
  7. Shelter
  8. My friends
  9. My amazing team
  10. Food
  11. The sun that streams through my window
  12. Forgiveness
  13. Grace
  14. My church
  15. My country
  16. My safety
  17. My faith in Christ
  18. The salvation of each person in my family
  19. My financial blessings
  20. My work

The more things I listed, the more that came to my mind. The longer the list grew, the more I realized that I was most thankful for people rather than material things.

Finally I realized that all of the things I was thankful for were BLESSINGS. With the exception of the spiritual blessings in my life ALL OF THEM could be taken in an instant.

I found the entire song on Youtube as sung by The Irish Choir. The piano, the cadence, the enthusiasm of the singers were all as I remembered the song from my youth.

Watch the timeless lyrics. Sing along. And have a blessed Thanksgiving. (We apologize for the brief ad at the beginning of the video, we were unable to find an ad-free version of the Irish Choir)

What are some of the blessings you have counted today? [reminder]

Comments

  1. Thank you for that beautiful song. It really lifted my spirits.
    PS. There was no ad.

  2. Each and every time I begin to count my blessings I’m overwhelmed. I have more blessings than I can count. The problem is that I sometimes use that as a crutch, an excuse not to count my blessings. I thank you for helping to stop and actually count my blessings. And I’m still counting 🙂
