Today I received another message from a person who read my book Fully Alive and finally took the first step toward discovering the joy of living again.
I have been thrilled to hear from people who stepped back from the brink of suicide and reached out for the help they desperately needed. Each of these people recognized that they had to act immediately. Each also had to slay some dragon myths that had kept them from acting sooner.
Here are some old myths that must be outed as the lies they are, and a single truth that can put you on the path to living fully alive.
Dragon Myth #1 “There’s always tomorrow.”
Not true. We don’t have any guarantee about tomorrow. We don’t even know what the rest of day has in store. We only have this moment. Tomorrow never comes.
The only tomorrow you have is the one you build by acting today. And those windows of opportunity are often small, like portholes that rust shut when not used. It is rare that not knowing what to do is the problem. Usually we know what we should do but are reluctant to do it.
If you don’t act now on what God has inspired you to do, it may never present itself again. What is the first step toward a worthy dream. Nothing will ever happen until you take action. NOW is the time and YOU are the one.
Dragon Myth #2 “Time is on our side.”
I have pictures from my 50 year class reunion and a drawer full of medicine that proves time is not on my side. I also have a kink in my hip that constantly whispers. “Time is not on your side, I am on your side”
The Bible confirms that this old saying is a myth.
Ecclesiastes 12 says “Remember your Creator in the days of your youth, before the days of trouble come and the years approach when you will say, ‘I find no pleasure in them’ —
Time is only on your side when you capture the moment now and use every moment of time that is left to act on what you know needs to be done.
Dragon Myth #3 “Good things come to those who wait.”
In reality, good things come to those who wait on the Lord. But once he speaks, the waiting is over. Your dreams or your nightmares will be a result of what you do with this moment, and the next and the next.
Here is the truth:
Now is the time for action and you are the one to take that first step.
None of this denies the need for caution and wisdom in the face of taking action. However too many men and women continue to procrastinate even after being certain of what the next move should be. They die still in bondage to the destructive habits that destroy their lives, they look back in regret as the door to great opportunities closes forever.
I have missed opportunities by buying into the above dragon myths. But I also have experienced a wonderful career, I have a beautiful family, and live a healthy and active life because when the time came to take action on these issues, I didn’t hesitate. I hope this post will inspire you to do the same.
Henry David Thoreau is credited with saying, “Most men live lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with their song still in them.” Not you! Not today! Not ever!
